It's here, whether you like it or not, Valentines Day is upon us and is either filled with girls swooning over how great their man is, or everyone else crying into a tub of Ben & Jerry's a la Bridget Jones.
I'm a bit of an inbetweener when it comes to Valentines Day, I'm currently single and have been for a while. Though, yes, it would be nice to have someone buy me all sorts of goodies and spoil me; I am also quite content with the fact that I'm still in my pyjamas after midday, with mascara smeared around my eyes and a day off work to relax. Last year I saw Ben Howard in Portsmouth with some friends and it was the best Valentines I'd ever had, (obviously I spent the whole night believing he was singing directly at me).
Today, for me, will be just like any other. I'm going to write a few things, tidy up my room a bit and listen to music. It's funny when you really listen to songs, how many of them are focused around love, I'd say a good 80% of all songs ever written are. Whether it's a "YOU ARE MY SOULMATE AND I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER" or a more negative "FUCK YOU, YOU WHORE" approach. Lyrics stem from the heart, that is either filled to the brim with giddy lovey dovey goodness, or drained out to a shrivelled mess.
So whether you're sneering at all the couples galavanting about town hand in hand, preparing the perfect evening for your loved one, or if you just want something to listen to today. Here's a few songs to suit all Valentines day folks. Whichever one you are.
The "I used to hate Valentines, but you're awesome and I like you lots" song:
Paramore - The Only Exception
So Valentines, she's laying on it!
The "Fuck You" song (male version):
Puddle Of Mudd - She Hates Me
The "Fuck You" song (female version):
Beyonce - Best Thing You Never Had
or for a bit of teen angst, stick this on.
Avril Lavigne - He Wasn't
For all you super sassy lovers out there:
Tom Jones - Sex Bomb
'Cause nothing beats a bit of Tom.
For your Bridget Jones moment:
Adele - Someone Like You
BRO'S BEFORE HO'S:
Don Broco - Priorities
For full effect, listen to the album version (YouTube wouldn't let me)
HO'S BEFORE BRO'S:
Beyonce - Single Ladies
WHERE MA LADIES AT?!
Because Ben Howard needs to be in here somewhere & it seems right seeing as the words are inked on my skin:
Ben Howard - Only Love
To be honest, I could go on and on with this list, but these are just a few tracks to suit whatever mood you're in this Valentines. Remember, even if you're alone, someone out there loves you!
I'll leave you with this; take it Whitney.
